Life Style and Medical Therapy

  • Diet Modification
At Heartland Cardiovascular Center, we value nutrition counseling as part of a comprehensive medical treatment plan for menu planning, food service, and nutrition education. Healthy eating can help you reduce or control risk factors for stroke and heart disease including high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and excess body weight. Our doctors can recommend a balanced diet plan created especially for you.
  • Exercise
Exercise is very important for a healthy heart. The specialists at Heartland Cardiovascular Center can make recommendations for a safe and effective exercise program that is specific for your health needs. It is important to have your doctor examine you before embarking on an exercise regime. Your doctor may refer you to an exercise physiologist that can help you formulate and gradually increase an exercise program specifically designed for your body. By exercising regularly and managing your weight responsibly, you can improve your health and reduce your risk for future health concerns.
  • Medical Treatment
Medication will not cure cardiovascular condition, but it can help keep symptoms under control and prevent future problems. Your treatment may involve medication, surgery, or both. There are several different types of medications for various conditions. The doctors at Heartland Cardiovascular Center will discuss the ones that are the most appropriate for you. They will educate you about the possible side effects and let you know how long it will take before the medication is working adequately. Additionally, because everyone is different and every medication works differently, it may take a few attempts to determine the best medication for you. Further, it is common for medication needs to change over time. Our doctors are well-informed about new medications and they will work closely with you and monitor your medications to ensure that you receive the most appropriate prescription at all times.

Interventional Cardiology

  • Coronary Angioplasty - Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI)
Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), previously called coronary angioplasty or balloon angioplasty, is used to treat diseased arteries. It involves threading a thin tube from an artery in the groin to an affected heart artery. A balloon at the end of the tube inflates to press the plaque in the artery to widen the opening in the artery so that blood can flow easier. In some cases, a stent is inserted to keep the artery open. Heartland Cardiovascular Center is proud to have doctors that are Board Certified in Interventional Cardiology, including PCI.
  • Coronary Stent
A coronary stent is a wire metal mesh tube that is placed in an artery to hold the artery open. The stent improves blood flow and can help relieve heart symptoms. A stent may be placed during PCI. A stent is permanent, and over time the inside lining of the artery grows over it.
  • Coronary Atherectomy
A coronary atherectomy is a procedure that is used to remove plaque (fat, cholesterol, and other substances) from the inside of the arteries that supply the heart with blood. The procedure may be performed with a laser or rotating shaver device. Both devices are attached to a catheter that is advanced through an artery to the affected area. Our doctors are not only experts in interventional cardiology methods, such as coronary atherectomy, but are cutting-edge researchers as well. Heartland Cardiovascular Center is proud to offer you the best in cardiovascular care.
  • Peripheral Interventions
Peripheral vascular interventions treat diseases of the blood vessels outside of the heart and brain, such as those in the legs, arms, stomach, and kidneys. Peripheral artery disease can restrict blood vessels and increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. Peripheral vascular interventions improve the flow of blood. Such treatments may include lifestyle changes, medications, angioplasty, and surgery.

Cardiovascular Surgery

  • Coronary Artery Bypass
Coronary artery bypass surgery, also called CABG “cabbage,” is used to improve the blood and oxygen flow to the heart. This surgery may be necessary if the coronary arteries that supply the heart are blocked by plaque. Coronary artery bypass surgery involves taking a blood vessel from another part of the body to create a detour around a clogged artery to restore the blood flow to the heart. Blood vessels are commonly taken from the leg and surgically attached to the coronary artery. It may be necessary to have bypass surgery on one or more of the coronary arteries. The Board Certified Cardiologists at Heartland Cardiovascular Center are prepared to discuss coronary artery bypass surgery in terms that you and your family understand.
  • Heart Valve Surgery
Heart valve surgery is used to repair or replace the valves in the heart to improve heart functioning. The heart valves work to keep the blood in the heart flowing in one direction. Heart valve surgery may be necessary to treat narrowed or leaking heart valves. Replacement valves may be artificial or from donors. Our surgeons can correct heart valve problems with state-of-the-art surgical technology.
  • Carotid Endarterectomy
A carotid endarterectomy is used to treat carotid artery disease and reduce the risk of stroke. The carotid arteries provide the main blood supply to the head and brain. A carotid endarterectomy is a surgical technique that is used to remove plaque from a narrowed artery to improve blood flow.
  • Peripheral Vascular Surgery
Peripheral vascular surgery is used to improve the blood flow in the blood vessels outside of the heart and brain, such as those in the legs, arms, stomach, and kidneys. Surgery may be necessary to restore blood flow in long portions of narrowed arteries. The surgery involves taking a blood vessel from another part of the body or using a synthetic blood vessel to create a detour around an affected artery to restore the blood flow. The Board Certified Cardiologists at Heartland Cardiovascular Center specialize in advanced surgery techniques that can correct peripheral vascular problems and significantly reduce the risk of future complications.
